live algae and copepod maintenance video - Friday, January 9, 2015 10:59 PM

I know that my way of doing things may not work for everyone but you can take what you like from it.  I don't have a sterile environment for my cultures but this has been working for me over the last yr and 1/2, maybe longer I can't really remember when I started.  I learned what works for me from trial and error.  My cultures are not contaminant free but they keep producing for me.

That's an impressive operation. Nice video. What acid are you using?

Ken it looks like HCL (Hydrochloric) for the acid.   Neat vid!

I am using Muriatic acid. I do about a 50:50 mix of acid and water.  We get large barrels of it but hobbiest can get it at any pool shop or even lowes.

Warning!!! If you use bleach to clean things, don't mix bleach and acid together.  They will react violently and release chlorine gas! Make sure you wear PPE (personal protective equipment) when you work with chemicals.

+1 on it being a great video.  I don't know if it was taped in real time or slightly fast forwarded, but it is amazing how much he gets done in a short amount of time.  It looks like he has had some good practice.

Also, given the thoroughness with which he worked, you can see why his contamination rate is fairly low.

Thanks Dave.  The algae culture part was taped in real time and the copepod part was sped up a bit. Depending on the number of algae I need to reset it takes me 15-45mins.  Maintenance on the  copepod cultures take about 10-15min.
I usually do maintenance on the algae cultures first.  I also usually do the iso. first.  If I do get sloppy the nanno. will out compete the iso.
I should probably also mention that the large vat next to the sink is make-up saltwater for just my algae cultures to help avoid contamination (the water out of the red hose).

Great video Ramon!  I have been trying to get some good ideas for rebuilding my algae rack. I have plenty after seeing your set up!

Also, excellent selection for the soundtrack. Steve Zissou hard at work! LOL

yes.  All those crazy people who purchased multiple 5 gallon water bottles to grow rotifers in, should grow phytoplankton in them instead. Just my unbiased opinion. ...
