mystery larvae - Wednesday, July 1, 2015 12:32 AM

A friend has pelagic spawners in his tank, Ruby Red Dragonette and Coral Beauty pairs.  He got some eggs, but when he gave them to me, he said there were 10 in there, but I couldn't see them even under the microscope.  I left them out overnight, thinking there was nothing alive in the container, but when I went to clean it out this morning, there were about 3 swimmers:
Here is one with a harpacticoid as a size reference:

I put them in a larval tub that has lots of ciliates and parvocalanus.  I saw one swimming hours later after work.  Here's some more pix: Can you ID the larvae?

Looked up a few pro larvae, and I think it's a ruby red dragonet.  Interestingly, there is no agreed upon scientific name for these…

could very well be:

I've never seen the parents.  I didn't exhaustively look for a name, as you can tell, Luis. Just stumbled on a thread where folks were arguing about it.  I'll try to find out what the parents look like.  Probably have pix or video from the owners.

I wish my ruby reds would start spawning. Good luck with these Kathy. These larvae do look different from my coral beauty prolarvae. More plump from above.

Luis, looking a the picture of the daddy, and the pictures of S. tudorjonesi, I don't think it is that. I think it is still undecided for the latin name.

And indeed it was.  The choice was Ruby Red or Coral Beauty, and the Rubys won.

They are still S. sp ruby red or wine red by some. Believed to be of the morrisoni complex, smaller than tudorjonesi.

Also for what it's worth the "tudorjonesi" pictured in the reefbuilders article doesn't match many other pictures of the species elsewhere. It looks more like the bartelsi pictures I was able to find.
