That 34sph ruby is huge. I still think we should offer a 'species first' for anyone proving it done entirely with cultured feeds.

They were nice to share some info:
First foods included parvocalanus, and "they started getting artemia around day 10. They began sitting on the bottom for longer and longer periods of time around day 12. We think metamorphosis occurred around day 20-23, during that time they went from orange to whitish cream color, flattened out dorsally and showed signs of the exaggerated pelvic fins that they rest on. They start receiving a pelleted diet around metamorphosis but are not fully weaned onto that until they are in growout. This is our first batch so the dates may change. Overall they develop a little slower than the other scooter species we have worked with."

I appreciate your loyalty Joe. Whether I'm first or not, I'm still having fun! I would like to be first,though... but I have missing pieces, like 60 days post settle, and that pesky spawning part.  And while I have great partners, I don't have the resources of ORA. One of those resources is being near the ocean, but I think they could have used captive raised foods.  In the end, the goal is to help everybody do this.  I'm still having fun.

In the end, you or anyone else raising a single one, with a detailed report of your protocol that made it happen, is worth more than thousands of commercially produced fish that come from behind a curtain. That's why we do this. And it comes with the added plus of being a lot of fun

Kathy I hope you have not thrown in the towel on these guys bec of ORA's accomplishments. LA's DD sells these fish in pairs often and I have thought about buying a pair. They are an attractive fish and still would be a great accomplishment for anyone doing it outside of large funded operations.

Not at all. Tom's broodstock disappeared while he was on vacation.  He has since replaced them, but we were waiting for them to spawn, which they have just done. !!!!!

On November 29, Tom gave me some C. bispinosa eggs and some S. sycorax (Ruby Red scooters) eggs and I put them both in a single tub because that is what I had prepared, and they need the same foods and timing, at least initially.  Also there were not a ton of eggs, although enough to attempt another run. Today on 12/12/16, Day 13 for these guys the sycorax are bright yellow and plump around the middle with a square-ish face, and the bispinosa are long and perciform and slightly pink. I might have 2 survivors of each, but it is hard to tell in the dark tub water. Today is the first time I was able to clearly distinguish the angels from the scooters. Kinda fun.

Now at day 24 I have one big yellow guy who is hovering more and more at the bottom. I can barely see him down there. There was a second one, who might be on the bottom, or might be a gonner, hard to say. I'll feed and leave undisturbed for a couple of days. Then do a hard search for survivors, and possibly move them to a glass tank where I can see them.

Clearly settled today.  I tried to see him through the endoscope, and I got a glimpse before the camera died. Very colorful. Day 28.

Well done again,Kathy! Got some questions...
Are sycorax and tudorjonesi two different ruby red dragonet species?,In that case, are both available?
What you mean by a perciform larva?
What is your endoscope?

Thanks Luis!
Sycorax and tudorjonesi are two different dragonet species. Not sure of availability. They do look different.
Perciform, to me, means the shape of a child's formulaic drawing of a fish, like an elongated American football with a tail.

When I get an endoscope that works, I'll post the link.  So far I am disappointed.

Luis,
Here is an article by Lemon Tyk, the guy who eventually described and named them:

Here is part of the first page of the publication that named them:

and here is a link to ReefBuilders that has pix of both kinds:

Yes, but it is used for plumbing and car repair as well. I wanted a waterproof one. the one I had was not, apparently, despite the label.
