I recently posted this on Reed's page on Facebook but should probably share it here as well. This is my batch of Banggai Cardinals that has been raised from day one on Otohime. They were feed two batches of BBS about a week after release as insurance since I was goign away fro a 3 day weekend but other than that almost all Otohime A, B1, and now some of the new TD Oto C1

Thanks guys.. The trick for me was getting the right amount amount of flow in the tank so the Otohime moves around but not so much that babies are burning tons of energy trying to hold their ground in the current.

Yep, it is all about the flow. I don't use oto, but I also raise my fry on non-live food and have very good success. They are actually fed the same exact things as the parents, just shaved. My next batch comming up for sale was my first attempt using all frozen food. Release count was 35, I refused to feed any live food, so I played around with flow patterns until i saw solid striking behavior on a consistent basis. At day 10 I had lost 11, but I had not found the right flow patter until about day 5 or so. After that I have lost only 1. I have raised several other batches using non-live food, so I could reproduce results I was seeing. The last two batches I worked with, same feeding regiment, tank size, etc...only difference was in flow. I had done this experiement once before and had the same results. Flow matching the pattern I found, I lost a total 40% by day 60. Using 'whatever' flow on another batch, same parents and feeding regiment, I had lost 90%. My previous attempt at this experiement was was 20% loss on 'flow' and 90% loss on 'whatever'. So I am convinced for bangaii, live food OR flow are critical poeces.

Actually when it came around to selling time on this batch I was able to do a final count and through the whole process I had only lost 2 fish. It seems that I found the right amount of flow on try #1. The tank that the babies where in also had a decent amount of LR in it. I suspect that this created places for the fry to get in and out of the current as they saw fit. So there were areas of high flow and lots of food movement and outside of feeding time the fry could move to lower flow areas to save energy.

Is that the same thing that works for you Caesra ?

I actually raise them in barebottom. I keep one fake plant in with them, which they tend to hide in. I have tried to figure out how to explain the flow pattern but I haven't succeeded yet. Let's say flat and turbulent but not high flow. Which would match what penney said, as that is what would occur when high flow wraps around a rock. Maybe some day I ought to just put some pearls in the water and get out the video cam.

I once bought some very young banggais and put them in with my juvenile clownfish. I prepared to give them NHBS, but I noticed that very quickly, they were eating and growing on the 4x a day Otohime that the clownfish were getting. Made it very easy for me!

It's a family thing, Really drives my wife nuts. It happens to her all the time at places where they having things filed Last name first, like at doctor's offices. Which makes no sense to me as they look at those things all day long and KNOW that they are Lastname, Firstname... So in short yes there is a lack of desire to be called "penney" Just remember it can be dangerous to tick off the guy the does all the coding here

I'm tapped out at the moment. My good male dissappeared while on Vacation and I'm trying to get more Brood stock in place as we speak. I have whatI think is a male in QT right now that I've gotten weaned onto pellet food and should be coming out soon. These hot temps aren't helping much either as I'm starting to think they have something to do with the males not holding to term.

Shipping is easy and safe with the proper materials and knowledge. Someone should start a "How To Ship" thread
