I'm new and not too bright! - Saturday, August 6, 2011 1:15 PM

Hi there

I was referred here by a member of another forum as I was telling him that our Bengaii's are always holding and I'd love to breed them!

My husband and I keep Malawi Cichlids and they won't stop breeding but we just leave them to it and a decent amount of the fry survive. However, I know NOTHING about getting Bengaii's past the brooding stage. I'd love some advice especially if it's in laymens terms!

We have a 60ltr tank that I was thinking I could use but I don't know how to set it up as a fry tank. Should I use an airstone? What type of filtration? Do I need substrate or rock?

HEEEEELP!!!

Welcome! Click on the forum list button at the bottom of the page and go to the fish breeding journals. There are a bunch of Banggai journals there that will help.

Glad to see your posting Rach. All of us are a bit green when first starting so don't be hesitant about asking specific questions. There will always be someone who will be able to give you advice.

You where smart enough to come here so I'd say your pretty bright indeed.. This should give you some place to start.. Go to: http://www.mbisite.org/Search.aspx?Species=14 and scroll to the bottom of the page. You'll find a bunch of journals from people that have worked with them before.

Thanks guys. The male is holding again at the moment and we don't have a tank set up for him right now. We'll let this one go and start getting the tank ready for next time. Duck has given me some great advice for a tank for him

I'm wondering if it'd be best to catch my pair and put them in the tank and then wait until he's holding again to take the female out? They're in my display tank at the moment and I'm worried that if I pull the tank apart to catch him, he'll panic and spit

How about just settign up a ten gallon tank for the babies and after the babies have hatched catch the male and get him to spit in the 10 gallon tank. That procedure has worked well for me.

I have raised countless batches and removing the male into a holding tank is pretty easy as long as you are not impatient.  Leave the net alone.  Go find a clear container...i use one like an LFS would use when holding a fish they are catching for you.  Gently coax the male into that container...as long as you dont spook him, the male will usually slowly move away from your container until he is in a corner.  Then gently pick him up.  I have never had a spit this way.  I have had spits using nets.

Brilliant, thanks for the advice. The only problem I have is that he spends most of his time behind a pretty big rock that is on of the key supports in our tank!
I'll give it a go as soon as I have the new tank set up
