After keeping one for over two years, I've found adult brittle stars to be completely inexplicable. Consider, they can retain a mental map of their surroundings, remember where they last found food, and even anticipate feeding patterns. That might not seem so special, until you realize, they don't have a brain. How does a creature retain a mental map without a brain? I'm also curious what cued these baby stars to all act at once. From start to finish, it all lasted maybe 5 minutes. That's pretty good timing. I assume it's a chemical signal, but I have to wonder what environmental conditions, if any, instigated that signal.

It is also possible that it is related to the time of year. There are many corals that spawn naturally during the same few weeks each year. It's interesting that you say that. My parameters are good, but my Helfrichi disappeared just before this happened. Was in good health, just disappeared without a trace. Which is odd, because there's nothing else in the tank large enough to devour it without leaving some kind of trace. Next day this happened. Cyclical behavior is certainly possible, but I'd be curious to know how anything in my tank could know what day it is.

It has never done that before and still appears in perfectly good health. {shrug}
