Cysts are decapsulated before hatching. I put the eggs into the hatchery with saltwater (1.018), running air for one hour to hydrate the eggs. Sieve the eggs out, then put the eggs back in with about a cup of full strength bleach. Let them bubble until they all turn orange and some (1%?) are clear (about 5 mins). Sieve the eggs out, and rinse really well with tap water. They will still have a faint smell of bleach, but this doesn't seem to effect anything. Decapped eggs are stored in the fridge in extra high salinity water. I put about 2 tbsp of marine salt into about 100 mL of water over 2 tbsp of decapped eggs. This makes for no shells in the hatcheries. Hatcheries are cleaned and dried daily with vinegar solution after BS are harvested. |
