Totally excited right now! While looking at all the hermit crab larvae that were collected in my overflow 250 micron strainer last night, I decided to check the edges of the strainer with a light after turning out the room lights. I was amazed to find a bunch of coral beauty eggs! I spent the next half hour separating the crab larvae from the eggs and now have maybe a hundred in a small plastic container floating in my frag tank. Below are several pics that are taken probably about 14-15 hours post spawn, with obvious growth on the egg. I'll check tonight to see if there are any hatched. The cup edge to the naked eye (with as much magnification as an iphone can get) 10x mag with the scope

We now have pro larvae. The hatching cups are full off tiny 2mm long grayish lines - my best description of what they look like to the naked eye. Here is a picture of one at 10x mag. 22hrs post spawn

No survivors this morning, but another good bunch of eggs in the strainer. I'll have to set up a better incubator - maybe a small clear glass container set in my frag tank with the very least bubble rate I can get. The little plastic containers I was using were sealed so they wouldn't lose the larvae if they tipped over. I am most pleased that it seems I will be able to get a steady supply of fertile eggs to work with! Here is a pic of a "fresh" egg on the stage micrometer. I measured it at 700 microns. 9 hrs post spawn

4/4/15 36 hrs post-spawn. Checked on the hatch container this morning, and at first couldn’t see anything in there. With a small light I found very thin little silvery “strings” (approx. 2.5mm long) adrift. I thought these would be the dead prolarvae. I removed one with a pipette to check under the scope & was surprised to find it very alive – so much so that I could barely keep it in the scope’s field of view long enough for a lousy picture. There appears to be the initial stages of a gut “tube”, and the tail movements allowed for pretty good swimming. Also (not seen in this pic) there seems to be a pigment spot developing where I think the eyes will be. I didn’t have the heart to kill it with alcohol for better pics! On further inspection, I found quite a few in the hatch container – so maybe later this afternoon…. When I see what appears to be mouth parts, I’ll add parvocalanus and a bit of t-iso.

Well, no survivors this morning - would have been about 60 hrs. Last night at 48 hrs I could still see a few live ones in the container. Below is a pic from 48 hrs post spawn. I collected some more eggs this morning to try again.

You're started, stay with it. What temps are the eggs at? Does the container float in the parent tank? You got me hooked now.

Temp is 79 F. The eggs are in a container in my frag tub attached to the main system. While this is going to be really tough and success is a long shot, it's nice being able to work with fresh eggs virtually every day.

Nothing new, and work has been really busy the past few weeks. I haven't collected eggs for about 2 weeks now, I'm trying to devise a small volume kreisel that I can place in my frag tub for temp regulation, and get gentle water circulation through a fine micron mesh. I did get a larvae to about 72 hours, but didn't get any pics (was trying not to handle it any more than I had to). Right now my biggest goal is to figure a way to make it to the workshop so I can hear Ramon's talk!

Still no witnessed spawning (but lots of displaying by the male) for a while now since doing some rearranging & cleaning in the tank. I happened to find a nice 2" female today and now have her in quarantine. Hopefully as a trio they will get back to spawning so I can try again!
