Biology: Found near reefs, and in caves and crevices along drop-offs (Ref. 8631). Nocturnal, hides under ledges and in holes by day (Ref. 9710). It's false eye which is actually the dorsal fin ocellus confuses predators because it poses an inverted image of a fish. When alarmed, it will poke it's head into a hole and expose it's tail end which mimics the head of the moray eel (Ref. 9710). Has been reared in captivity (Ref. 35426).

Distribution: Western Central Atlantic: South Carolina, USA and Bermuda to Tobago and the Lesser Antilles. All Canthigaster specimens so far recorded from Madeira belong to Canthigaster capistrata (Ref. 43205).
Description: Dorsal spines (total): 0; Dorsal soft rays (total): 10-11; Anal spines: 0; Anal soft rays: 9. Distinguished from all other Atlantic species by a short upper dark longitudinal stripe, presence of few spots on flank and dorsum, and absence of a conspicuous (larger than eye) spot on the dorsum. The upper dark longitudinal stripe extends from caudal-fin dorsal margin to the vertical through dorsal-fin base. Although a horizontal line of dark spots extends anterior to the anterior portion of the horizontal dark stripe in some specimens, and sometimes even surpasses the dorsal fin base, this line of spots never forms a continuous stripe. Also distinguished by the absence of vertically oriented bars on the caudal fin and by the presence of bars on the snout (Ref. 43205).
Biology: Inhabits reefs and marginal habitats such as seagrass beds (Ref. 43205). Diet consists of seagrass, sponges, crabs and other crustaceans, mollusks, polychaete worms, sea urchins, starfishes, hydroids and algae (Ref. 13442). Monogamous (Ref. 52884).

Biology: Found among coral heads and rocks of subtidal lagoon and seaward reefs (Ref. 4919, 5503). Common on coastal reefs at various depths. Mimic filefish, males are territorial and are often seen fighting (Ref. 48637). Feed mainly on filamentous green and red algae, tunicates, and on smaller amounts of corals, bryozoans, polychaetes, echinoderms, mollusks, and brown and coralline red algae. Form shoals (10-100 or more) often with the filefish, Paraluteres prionurus (about 5% of shoal) mimicking C. valentini to protect it from predators (Ref. 4919, 5503). Territorial and haremic; males spawn with a different female each day (Ref. 9710). One or more territories are occupied and defended each by a female where a single large male stands guard (Ref. 55082). All sexually mature females are territorial females (Ref. 55082). Biology: nhabits areas with coral rubble and frequently occurs in small groups of up to about 10 individuals. Feeds on small invertebrates and algae (Ref. 5503). Spawns at sunset; male stimulating the emission of eggs with biting motions on female's abdomen; eggs released and abandoned in open water without any particular parental care (Ref. 5503). Popular aquarium fish in Natal. Occasionally exported from Kenya.

Juveniles have a characteristic blue-edged black ocellus in the middle of each side. There is a blue circle around the eye and a blue blotch on the posterior margin of the operculum. Biology: Occur in coral rich areas of shallow lagoon and exposed seaward reefs from the lower surge zone (Ref. 9710) to 50 m (Ref. 30874). Benthopelagic (Ref. 58302). Juveniles secretive (Ref. 9710). Feed mainly on algae. Live as long as 11 years in captivity (Ref. 37816). Frequently exported through the aquarium trade (Ref. 48391).

Anterior half of the body, from the snout up to the line from the third dorsal spine to the middle of the pelvic-anal fin space, golden yellow; rest of the body, including the adjacent dorsal and anal fins, to the caudal peduncle dark blue or black; caudal fin and peduncle golden yellow. An irregular bright blue band rings the orbit. Dorsal and anal fins with a narrow bright blue margin.
Biology: Found in coral and rubble areas on steep outer reef slopes. Solitary or in small groups of four to five individuals.

Biology: Inhabits steep outer reef slopes, typically in small tracks of rubble between areas of rich coral growth (Ref. 33482). Benthopelagic at 20-90 m (Ref. 58302). Cryptic. Herbivorous (Ref. 33482). Feeds readily in aquaria. Forms harems of 3-7 individuals. Rarely exported through the aquarium trade
