Eastern Central Pacific: endemic to the Hawaiian Islands. Have recently been reported from Midway Islands (Ref. 28620).
Description: Sexes exhibit different coloration. Male pearly white with anterior portion of the head, from the snout to just behind the eye, yellow orange; anterior half of the caudal fin black; dorsal and anal fins white with a broad orange band distally; the pectoral and pelvic fins orange. Female pearly white with anterior portion of the head, from the snout to just behind the eye black or gray; anterior half of the caudal fin also black; distal portion of pelvic fins orange.
Biology: Inhabits seaward reefs (Ref. 9710). Benthopelagic over rock and sand (Ref. 58302)

Description: Dorsal spines (total): 15 - 16; Dorsal soft rays (total): 15-16; Anal spines: 3; Anal soft rays: 14 - 17. Males light blue with 8 black stripes on the lower 2/3 of the body (the posterior end of the uppermost yellow, the lowermost stripes extending the adjacent anal fin); females light blue with a vertical black bar above the eye and spots on the forehead; both sexes with a broad submarginal band on the dorsal and anal fins; females with broad submarginal band on the caudal-fin lobes.
Biology: Occurs in current-swept outer reef slopes and drop-offs (Ref. 4859). Feeds on plankton. Forms harems of 2-5 individuals. Occasionally exported through the aquarium trade (Ref. 48391).

Biology: Occur in deep lagoon and seaward reefs where they feed by rooting for crustaceans and other invertebrates in the sand. Also feed on small fishes. Small juveniles live among the tentacles of jellyfish (Ref. 9710). Form schools. Noted for their behavior to closely swim around sharks and other large fish, but also following divers (Ref. 10361) to gain protection from likely predators (Ref. 9710). Marketed fresh and salted or dried (Ref. 9283). Juveniles are used in the aquarium trade.
