Description: Dorsal spines (total): 11 - 12; Dorsal soft rays (total): 15-18; Anal spines: 2; Anal soft rays: 17 - 21. Occurs in three color phases: one black anteriorly and yellow posteriorly (bicolor phase), the others black dorsally with a broad white lateral band and dusky belly with or without a yellow tail.
Biology: Inhabit clear lagoon and seaward reefs with mixed corals and algae-covered rocks. Oviparous (Ref. 205). Eggs are demersal and adhesive (Ref. 205).

Description: Very similar to Ecsenius cf bandanus, but readily identified by the double black spots on the abdominal region (Ref. 48636).
Biology: Occurs on reef crests and slopes with rich coral growth to a depth of about 15 m (Ref. 48636). Oviparous (Ref. 205). Eggs are demersal and adhesive (Ref. 205).

Description: Dorsal spines (total): 12; Dorsal soft rays (total): 17-18; Anal spines: 2; Anal soft rays: 19 - 20. Anterior nostril with a long cirrus on posterior margin only. A longitudinal dark stripe on body often interrupted in larger specimens. In some populations, the black lateral stripe is sometimes present as a series of blotches (not observed in Indonesia) (Ref. 48636).
Biology: Inhabits shallow clear coastal to outer reef crests with rich coral growth to about 15 m depth (Ref. 48636). Occur in coral reefs (Ref. 9710). Often collected at depths less than 1 m in the northernmost parts of its range, but may occur more deeply (to 28 m) further south, and rarely more shallow than 5 m (Ref. 5296). Oviparous (Ref. 205). Eggs are demersal and adhesive (Ref. 205).

Western Pacific: Philippines, Indonesia, Northern Australia, Papua New Guinea, and the Solomon Islands.
Description: Two forms: the true species has a yellow body, blue head and yellow iris; the dusky form (rarely all yellow), with pale blue-white iris, yellow back and tail. Both forms share a black anal spot and have similar meristics (Ref. 48636).
Biology: In Papua New Guinea, various individuals were seen swimming around large coral heads on reef slopes and would not rest on the corals like those seen in Indonesia. Oviparous (Ref. 205). Eggs are demersal and adhesive (Ref. 205). Its seems that the Indonesian and Philippines form represents a new species (Ref. 48636).

Description: A pale greenish species with bright yellow or golden ring around the eye, silvery line with orange below from under the eye to top of the pectoral fin base and a black spot around the anus (Ref. 48636).
Biology: Inhabits coastal reefs and on deep lagoon bommies. Occurs frequently at depths less than 15 m. In small groups in shallow depths on large sponges or brain corals (Ref. 48636). Oviparous (Ref. 205). Eggs are demersal and adhesive (Ref. 205). Minimum depth from Ref. 58018.

Indo-Pacific: Gulf of Aqaba and southeast coast of Africa to the Marquesan Islands.
Description: Dorsal spines (total): 13 - 14; Dorsal soft rays (total): 19-21; Anal spines: 2; Anal soft rays: 20 - 23. Golden orange in color; black spot around anus; anterior part of dorsal fin with narrow dark margin (Ref. 4404). Indonesian form grey or greenish to golden-yellow. Tail long in adults (Ref. 48636).
Biology: Inhabits coral reefs (Ref. 9710), from clear coastal to outer reef walls, usually where currents are moderate (Ref. 48636). During its orange-yellow phase, it is observed to school with Pseudanthias squamipinnis which it resembles in color. Individuals of Ecsenius midas can change color quickly from when on the bottom to swimming in open water to match the colors of the fishes it mixes with (Ref. 48636). Reported to feed on zooplankton. Minimum depth reported taken from Ref. 9710. Also a planktivore (Ref. 37816). Oviparous (Ref. 205). Eggs are demersal and adhesive (Ref. 205).
