Replaced by Amblygobius albimaculatus in the Red Sea and Amblygobius semicinctus in the western Indian Ocean (Ref. 37816).

Biology: Adults inhabit coastal reefs and lagoons on sand and rubble margins of algal reefs and sometimes near seagrass beds (Ref. 48637). Feed by sifting mouthfuls of sand and expelling it through the gills, to capture small invertebrates, organic matter, and large quantities of algae. Monogamous (Ref. 52884). Spawnings are synchronous with semilunar periods (Ref. 84980). Eggs are deposited in burrows which are tended by the male parent (Ref. 84980). Minimum depth reported from (Ref. 27115). Biology: Occurs in schools near large coral columns and heads. Has been reared in captivity (Ref. 35408). Hovers above bottom in caves and shaded areas in reefs (Ref. 26938).

Description: Dorsal spines (total): 7; Dorsal soft rays (total): 10 - 10; Anal spines: 1; Anal soft rays: 9. Predorsal scales absent. Occurs in two color phases, one yellow and the other with whitish ground color; both forms with 4-5 dusky bars (although faint in yellow fish) and fine pale blue or white spotting on head and anterodorsal part of body and fins. A dark brown streak above maxilla (Ref. 27362).
Biology: Inhabits sandy areas of shallow lagoons and protected coastal bays (Ref. 9710). Lives in a burrow with alpheid shrimps. Found in clear coastal sand slopes and lagoons, usually in depth of 10-25 meters (Ref. 48637).

Distribution: Indo-West Pacific: East Africa to Melanesia and the Great Barrier Reef.
Description: Mostly black with fine pale spotting or white saddles over top of head and back; sometimes yellow (Ref. 30404).
Biology: Found on sand near patch reefs, usually in 5 m but to at least 15 m (Ref. 9710). Found in burrows with alpheid shrimps (Ref. 2334). Two individuals sometimes share a burrow, and these may be one of each color (Ref. 9360). Occurs in clear coastal and inner reef sand slopes, in small colonies in depth of 6-20 meters (Ref. 48637).

A black stripe beginning on snout, passing through lower part of eye, across upper end of gill opening onto body where it broadens and continues along lower side to end of caudal fin (Ref. 13442).
Biology: Inhabits coral reefs with clear waters, preferably in oceanic, insular areas (Ref. 13928). In pairs near coral heads. Monogamous (Ref. 52884). A cleaner (Ref. 9710). Minimum depth reported from Ref. 27115. Has been reared in captivity (Ref. 35420). Feeds on ectoparasites of fishes (Ref. 13442).
